Rapid City, SD

My name is Marie High Bear, and my Lakota name is Wíyaka Wašté Wíŋ (Good Feather Woman). I am an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Oohenunpa and Minnicoujou. I have one precious little girl who is 6 years old.

Working in Indian Education for 11 years has allowed me to share the Oceti Sakowin culture, language, history, and traditions. Throughout my career, the best part has been working with the youth, educating others, building relationships, and helping others connect with who they are. I have become a dedicated educator and cultural advocate for years and strive to work with others to embrace our heritage and enrich the lives of our youth, families, and communities.

In my own time, I also volunteer with community organizations and collaborate with cultural programs and education. I currently work for the Rapid City Area School District as the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings District-wide teacher, integrating the OSEU Standards with culture and language into classrooms, promoting cultural understanding and meaningful connections in education. As a mother, much of my time is spent with my daughter and sharing the “heart work” of the OSEU’s with students, teachers, families, and community.
